But, certain people like diplomats or the very wealthy could travel and even though Japan had opened up under the Meiji Emperor, as mentioned earlier, very few people travelled because it was difficult.

The fact that Usui was able to travel out of Japan, shows his incredible determination to find the secret and that the Universe was supporting his quest!

Usui Goes To The Mountain to Find the Secret...

When Usui was roughly 60 years of age, he found a famous Buddhist sutra (writing). He decided to chant it along with doing a 21 day fast.

Usui went to Mt Kurama near Kyoto in Japan. This was, and still is, a sacred pilgrimage spot. To cut a long story short he fasted and chanted his sutra for 21 days. To tell you the truth, most people have trouble fasting just one day... but Usui was just so keen to find this healing secret.

On the 21^st day of his fast on the mountain, Usui felt a presence. And with the presence came a blinding light.

The light entered him and he became unconscious.

After a while Usui awoke and saw the beautiful sky and natural scenery. Everything seemed much more vibrant to Usui; for he had just had a profound spiritual experience.

Usui was excited, and started making his way down the mountain.

He saw a food vendor and ordered a solid hearty meal.

The vendor said, “I can see your beard has grown (you’ve been fasting up on the mountain), it is better to eat gruel to break your fast” (breaking a fast by eating solid, heavy food can be hard on the digestive system and cause a lot of discomfort, it is better to eat gentle, easy to digest food first, then and work up to normal solid food).

But Usui insisted on eating heavy, solid food... Amazingly, he suffered no ill effects even after fasting for 21 days.

After that Usui ran excitedly down the mountain to tell people what had happened. As he ran he tripped and fell, taking some skin off his toe.

He was bleeding profusely.

Usui instinctively put his hand on the injury and the bleeding stopped almost immediately.

It was incredible, was he dreaming?

No, this was the Universe showing him in no uncertain terms the incredible gift Usui was given while he was up on the mountain.

Later that day Usui saw a friend whose daughter had a terrible toothache. He tried placed his hand on her face and amazingly the pain left. Of course they were all very happy.
